Its design is elegant yet understated, characterized by a distinctive arched backrest. Despite its minimalist look and straightforward construction, the stool offers remarkable comfort and durability. The name Torii is inspired by the iconic wooden arches at the entrances of Shinto shrines in Japan, known as “bird perches” in English. This imagery reflects the stool’s unique proportions, traditional joinery, and the serene, balanced aesthetic of its well-crafted design. The Torii stool features robust traditional mortise and tenon joinery for the legs, showcasing the design’s integrity and strength. The arched backrest is securely attached to each back leg using two long steel dowels and epoxy glue, ensuring a durable joint that maintains a slim, lightweight profile without compromising stability. The finish is a high-quality, low-build water-based polyurethane that highlights the wood’s natural open-grain texture, providing a smooth, tactile surface and long-lasting durability. A solid aluminum foot rail safeguards the wooden frame. The Torii stool has successfully passed the European EN 15373, Level 2 test for commercial seating, which replicates a 250-pound person sitting 100,000 times, along with additional strength and durability assessments.
